About the Founder
Dr. Max Klau
Dr. Max Klau is a leadership consultant, coach, author and speaker.
An alum of four long-term service programs, he has led service trips in Israel, Honduras, Ghana, and Ukraine.
He received his Doctorate of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2005. His studies integrated a dual focus on developmental psychology and the adaptive leadership model developed by Ron Heifetz. In 2017, He published his dissertation as a book entitled Race and Social Change: A Quest, A Study, A Call to Action. The book explores the relationship between inner development and systemic racism and has been featured on many lists of recommended anti-racism resources.
His entire career has been in the nonprofit sector. Max spent ten years at City Year, the education-focused AmeriCorps program; while there, he developed an approach to scalable, transformational reflection that ensured that thousands of AmeriCorps members had a chance to turn inwards and focus on their own transformation while engaged in an intense year of service addressing education inequality.
Max went on the become the Chief Program Officer at the New Politics Leadership Academy, where he developed a pipeline of leadership programs designed to bring more servant leaders—military vets and alumni of national service programs—into elected office. More than 2500 servant leaders have graduated from those programs, and hundreds are now in elected office at every level from school board to Congress.
Max is an Integral Master Coach, certified by Integral Coaching Canada.
He is also an Inner Development Goals Ambassador.
He is the author of the book Developing Servant Leaders at Scale: How to Do It and Why It Matters. He founded the Center for Courageous Wholeness to bring the work described in that book out into the world.
