1. What is the Center for Courageous Wholeness?
The Center is an educational institution dedicated to guiding purpose-driven people and organizations to achieve greater wholeness by courageously integrating shadow, serving others, and scaling up their impact. It was founded by Dr. Max Klau, a Harvard-educated expert in the fields of servant leadership, inner development, and civic renewal.

2. What does “Courageous Wholeness” mean?
It refers to the bold integration of all aspects of the self—including the “shadow” parts that we prefer not to confront because they challenge our idealized view of who we are—into a coherent, authentic way of being. This inner alignment fuels outward service and leadership rooted in integrity, purpose, courage, and compassion.

Our services are designed for mid-career professionals, organizational leaders, changemakers, and communities seeking transformational growth through a blend of personal development and civic impact.

4. What types of services do you offer?
We offer:

  • Individual Coaching for leaders seeking greater alignment and authenticity.

  • Workshops & Retreats that guide participants through reflection, shadow work, and systems thinking.

  • Organizational Consulting to help institutions build a culture of inner development at scale.

  • Keynote Speaking on topics such as servant leadership, shadow integration, and systems transformation.

5. How are your programs different from other leadership trainings?
Our programs uniquely integrate inner development (like shadow work and purpose alignment) with outward service and systems change. Our approach has been refined over the course of two decades of work on the front lines of addressing pressing public problems. We offer a unique, powerful, proven framework for integrating inner and outer change.

6. What is shadow work, and why is it important?
Shadow work involves facing and integrating the hidden or uncomfortable parts of oneself. Doing so increases self-awareness and authenticity. I also ensures that we do not unconsciously project the parts of ourselves we don’t like onto some “other”, who becomes a dehumazed charicature of all that is bad when we have not done this work. It is both a powerful journey of personal growth and an urgent civic challenge at this pivotal moment in history.
